In Your Pocket
издание русской версии Tallinn In Your Pocket, к тому же оно знаменует
The year has rushed by like a speeding PKP Intercity train and the
festive season is nigh upon us. As we write this, Warsaw is both decking
the halls for the festive season, and humbugging the inevitable onset
of freezing conditions, mountainous snowfalls and short days.
November and December in Vienna are dominated by preparations for
Christmas. Around the second week of November the first Christmas
markets open, filling the streets with the sweet scent of Glühwein
mulled wine and gingerbread. Most close just before Christmas, though
the two best ones remain open until early January. The Prater also puts
on a special festival this winter. See our Christmas special on page 10
for an overview of the best winter markets.
Then there's the historical angle — Catherine the Great, Peter the
Great and the last Russian Tsars all left their mark on this great city,
as did Russia's great writers such as Dostoevsky and Pushkin. Many
visitors also associate the city with the communist era and memories of
old Leningrad, and especially the terrible siege of World War II, still
linger on in the city's many monuments and parks.
We’ve
been putting Russia into the pockets of visitors and expats for a full
decade now, and as the magazine celebrates its tenth anniversary here
this fall we’ve got another packed guide to all the top attractions in
Moscow in October and November. We’ve also got an interview with one of
the founders of In Your Pocket’s Russian editions, reflecting on 10
years of life in Russia. Looking ahead, art lovers are in for a bonanza
as the fifth edition of Moscow’s Biennale gets underway, bringing some
of the best and most thought-provoking contemporary art from around the
world to the city. It’s an event which has helped to reshape the local
cultural scene, and we pick out the highlights.
Even amongst Slovenes the phrase ‘I’m going to the coast’ more often
than not refers to a trip south across the Schengen border to the EU’s
newest member state Croatia. Put in the proper perspective this is
entirely understandable, as not only were Slovenia and Croatia part of
the same country just over two decades ago, but the Croatian mainland
and its numerous islands cover some 5,835km of Mediterranean coast,
which makes Slovenia’s 47km (or 46.6km to be exact) somewhat comical in
comparison. However, to quote one of the many proverbs attributed to the
great philosopher Plato: ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’, and
since the current national borders were established following the Second
World War, Slovenia has made the most of what it was left with, giving
it what is in our not so humble opinion centimetre for centimetre the
finest coastline in the world!
Tbilisi is a city of contrasts. A meeting point between eastern and
western civilisations for centenaries and is still today. A city built
along a riverbank and surrounded by hills, a settlement dating back to
the 4th century, but with a sky-scape that includes 21st century
architecture. Tbilisi is the capital of Georgia and can be
international, cosmopolitan and sophisticated, yet it is essentially and
distinctly Georgian that feels friendly and homely no.
